Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos, created in 1966 specifically for President Fidel Castro. Initially produced at the once-secret, now globally renowned El Laguito factory, these cigars were originally reserved as gifts for heads of state and diplomats visiting Cuba.
Since 1982, Cohiba has been made available to the public in limited quantities. The name "Cohiba" comes from the ancient Taino word for the bundles of tobacco leaves that Christopher Columbus saw the indigenous people of Cuba smoking—the earliest known form of a Habano.
Cohiba cigars are crafted using the "selection of selection" of the best tobacco leaves from five of the finest Vegas de Primera in the San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Uniquely among Habanos, three of Cohiba's filler leaves—seco, ligero, and the rare medio tiempo—undergo an additional barrel fermentation, giving Cohiba its distinctive aroma and flavour.
The brand consists of four lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5, and the prestigious Línea Behike. Through continuous innovation, Cohiba has maintained its leading position in the cigar world. It was the first Cuban brand to introduce a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009, made with tobaccos aged for a minimum of three and five years, respectively.
Every Cohiba cigar is "totalmente a mano, tripa larga"—long filler, handmade.
